September 17, 2008 (Sawf News) - Golmaal Returns stars Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and director Rohit Shetty appear on the episode of Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009 this weekend and release the music of their film.

During the filming of the episode, the awesome foursome together had a blast on the show, Ajay got a little nostalgic and went back to his old association with the channel when he and his family judged Rock N Roll Family.

The participants were thrilled with the big star line up and inspired by their presence to add zing to their performances.

The episode was marked by a walkout by Pakistan ki Beti, Sara Raza Khan, who narrated how she is being treated as an outcast here amongst her peers in Challenge 2009.

The girl without a father, far away from home, alone in this big city of Mumbai with her mother, is actually facing a lot of objection from her people back home in Pakistan. She is the first and the only Muslim girl to have made such a big leap here despite staunch opposition from the people of her community. She feels that she is being sidelined here amidst her Indian and overseas counterparts.

She let everyone present know that she no longer wished to be a part of this show, leaving everyone flabbergasted.

This week's episodes feature wild card entries - Vaishali - the Saregamapa Marathi winner and Somen Nandi - the Bangla Saregamapa winner. Also, all contestants get to sing their favorite songs and gain as much mileage as possible.

The four musical maestros contesting Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009 are Adesh Srivastava representing Jai Gharana, Dhoom Gharana's Pritam Chakraborty, Shankar Mahadevan from Lakshay Gharana and Himesh Reshammiya in a new avtaar who retains the mentorship of Rock Gharana. 32 contestants selected from across 5 regions and 25 countries, will compete with each other under the guidance of the four mentors. The mentors enter the battlefield armed with their respective teams in the quest to find the deserving winners.

Ever popular host cum friend of the participants is back on stage to take charge of this season as well -Aditya Narayan.

The actress Sonali Bendre will be back in our homes with the fourth season of Indian Idol.
Reality television is not new to Sonali. She was earlier seen in Kya Masti Kya Dhoom and Mr and Mrs. Sonali will be judging Indian Idol, along with Anu Malek, Javed Akhtar and Kailash Kher. As the hit singing show premieres tonight, Sonali chats with Patcy N.

How did you bag Indian Idol?

When I judged Mr and Mrs for Sony Entertainment Television, it was like a dry run. I enjoyed my experience of working with them. So when they approached me for Indian Idol, I decided to do it. Also, the people in [production house] Miditech know my sister very well, so there was a comfort level. I’m too lazy to step out of my comfort zone.

Did you travel extensively for the Indian Idol auditions?

I went to most parts of India. But I did not go to London, as my child is only three years old. I was apprehensive of leaving him behind. But I went to Dubai, as it was a shorter flight. Source

REALITY SHOWS and small screen have become synonymous with each other. In fact, reality shows have left the televisions soaps far behind to rule the television rating points (TRPs). Sony Entertainment Television itself was highly excited over the huge success of Indian Idol 1. The channel decided to roll out the show every year. However, Indian Idol 2 and 3 did not become as popular as the first edition. Winners of two editions, Sandeep Acharya (Indian Idol 2) and Prashant Tamang (Indian Idol 3) could not create magic like Sawant. Their contract albums with Sony were also flop and hardly anyone remembers them as idols.

Meanwhile, the viewership of the Indian Idol also dropped. The old format of the show was one of the reasons behind the poor viewership. Is ICICI Bank affected by Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy?

ICICI Bank, the second largest bank of India and the largest bank in private sector, has straight away dismissed any problems with its ICICI UK exposure to Lehman Brothers Bonds. As per the news, Chanda Kochar, joint managing director of ICICI Bank, said its cumulative overseas exposure is less than 4 per cent of its consolidated assets and the bank has the ability to take any losses, if they arise. Since the day Lehman Brothers declared Banruptcy, there are big rumors running around in the market about ICICI bank’s exposure to the troubled Lehman Brothers Bank and its Bonds. There have been questions raised about ICICI bank’s solvency concerns.

“The exposure is very small compared to our balance sheet and profitability and the risk could be even lower,” she said. Some of the losses on overseas investments, Kochar said, are just mark-to-market provisions, “not underlying credit losses”.

On rumours of senior management selling their stake, Kochar said that none of the bank’s working directors has sold any stake in 2008 and described these speculations as “malicious”. “We have reasons to believe the rumours are malicious,” she said. The bank plans to urge the regulator to take action against those spreading it.

As per the news, The current credit turmoil in the Wall Street has also impacted the domestic liquidity. But Kochar indicated that ICICI Bank’s liquidity situation remains comfortable as “the bank had taken steps a year ago to increase it”. “We operate on domestic liquidity in the range of Rs 8,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore and global cash and cash equivalents of $2 billion,” she said.

On the Wall Street crisis, she said that it is more panic that erosion of underlying value. She noted that recent deals in which US investment bank Merrill Lynch was bought by Bank of America, and Lloyds TSB’s takeover deal of HBOS PLC, UK’s biggest mortgage lender. Both these institutions were bought at much higher prices than their market prices, she pointed out.

First Google-powered phone coming Sept 23...

T-Mobile plans to show off the first wireless phone powered by Google Inc.’s much-anticipated Android software system at a Sept. 23 news conference.

Although T-Mobile intends to demonstrate the phone for reporters and analysts invited to next week’s event in New York, the handset isn’t expected to be available in stores until next month.

More specifics about the phone’s shipping date and pricing are still to come. T-Mobile is expected to subsidize part of the phone’s cost for buyers who agree to subscribe to the carrier’s mobile service.

A thousand bank closure chances....

he collapse of 158-year-old Lehman Brothers and distress sale of Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns could be followed with as many as a thousand bank closures in the ongoing financial crisis, believes billionaire investor Wilbur Ross.

In an interview with CNBC.Com, the legendary investor said that there could be a lot more bank closures in the coming months, and added that this could create significant investment opportunities for many.

Wilbur Ross is Chairman and CEO of WL Ross and Co LLC, a principal investment firm specialising in restructuring, buyouts, and industry consolidations, which he founded in 2000.

The firm invests in financially distressed companies and also joins hands with other investors in case of larger transactions.

WL Ross is said to have nearly 70 per cent of its assets in cash, making its position very suitable for participating in distress sale deals.

Admitting that he would be looking at picking up some small institutions, Ross said, “There will be opportunities, but we will need federal assistance in them, because what we’re mainly looking for is stable sources of deposits, not so much the loan portfolio.”

“I do think a lot of the regional ones will (close), just as they did in the last savings and loan crisis in the 1990s,” CNBC.com quoted Ross as saying.

The ongoing crisis in the global financial markets deepened recently as Lehman Brothers filed for the biggest ever bankruptcy in the world, Bank of America bought over Merrill Lynch in a distress sale and the government rushed in to save the world’s largest insurer AIG.

Ross said that there would be too many people willing to provide capital to the large financials, which makes them less of a bargain than smaller banks.

When asked about his views on Bank of America’s purchase of Merrill Lynch, Ross said that he didn’t think that Merrill was in that dire a position.

“I think people in general felt better about Merrill’s situation than about Lehman. I think ever since John Thain came in, he’s done a wonderful job trying to fix what was a very difficult situation,” Ross said.

He also noted that this was really now the second successful turnaround for Thain. “He (Thain) saved Merrill, went into BoFA … Temasek, for example, went into something like a $5 a share profit out of this. So it’s not a tragic ending.”

“It will be very interesting to see where Thain ends up in the Bank of America hierarchy,” Ross added.

Today I come up with a Wikipedia article that gave me inspiration to this post: How to Block ads (like Adsense and Adbrite) on any website using any browser (Firefox or IE or any other browser under Windows).

The idea is simple : Redirecting the advertising website host name to another IP address, then you can't access it.

1. How to do it?
   
   It's general (not only for Ads), you can block any website from showing on your computer on any browser.
   To do it, open the execute command, and type
   

   notepad C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
   

   Then note pad will open a text file. You'll have to edit it.
   You can add as my host names you want. Normally, you should find the following

   Leave this one in peace and add another line

   After saving your file, you'll notice that Adsense ads don't show on any website.

Movie Review : Sas Bahu or Sensex : Forget about this....

Is this for real? Sensex@30K? When the whole world is embroiled in a financial bloodbath, is it possible for aapro Sensex to touch 30,000 circa 2008?

Unbelievable, but then that’s Bollywood for you as Saas Bahu Aur Sensex — written and directed by Shona Urvashi — proves once again that anything is possible in dreamland.

The agonising 140-odd minutes of the film is a tale about a Parsi stock broker Firoze Sethna (Farooq Sheikh), who is ‘rude and insensitive’, oomphy Mrs Binita Sen (Kirron Kher) and a gaggle of women.
Speaking of oomph, there seems to be an abundance of it here whether its older ladies like Lillete Dubey (playing the protagonist Ankur’s Sindhi mother), Sharon Prabhakar (playing Punjabi-mouthing ribaldrous housewife who urges you not to miss the ‘r’ in her last name Brar) or the younger and of course, scantily clad women led by Tanushree Datta and Masumeh Makhija.

The characters are almost caricature-like. A group of stereotypical Tamil, Punjabi, Maharashtrian, Muslim, Sindhi and Bengali middle class housewives, led by Binita, want to invest their money in the roaring stock market even as it reaches the 10,000 level threshold.

The main plot — if you can call it that — entangles itself between the Sensex’s journey from 7,000 to almost 30,000 points and the love triangle that embroils the life of newcomer, clumsy Ritesh Jethmalani (Ankur), greedy Kirti Wagaskar (Masumeh) and depressed-by-her-parents’-divorce Nitya Sen (Tanushree). There is no continuity in the storyline and characters lack depth.

Shona Urvashi treads the tried-and-tested formula of Mumbai-as-a microcosm-of-India where people (mostly saas and bahus) belonging to different religions and regions lead a normal life, which include gossiping about what their society’s new arrival Binita is doing with Mr Sethna, discussing and mocking the *** lives of their neighbours, cracking ribaldrous jokes (watch the scene where Sharon Prabhakar holds two papayas in her hand and says, ‘Aajkal lagata hai inki bhi plastic surgery hoti hai’ and, of course, watching Saas Bhi Kabhi Kanya Thi.

This is, however, a sore attempt to ape Aziz Mirza’s Nukkad or Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman characters albeit in a plush environ. The music, too, is not worth a mention.

However, if you think you are too disturbed or have lost a great fortune because of the current goings-on in the global financial market and have nothing else to do on a Saturday or Sunday — the stock market remains closed on weekends — then perhaps you can think of watching this forgettable movie.

2 suspected terrorists killed by Delhi Police...

New Delhi: A team of the Special Cell of Delhi Police has killed two alleged terrorists in an encounter on Friday near Jamia Qila area of South District in New Delhi, police said.

Reports say at least four men are holed up inside house number L-18, Batala House, which is near Khalila Mosque.

“The encounter is on between the Special Cell of Delhi Police and suspected terrorists,” a senior Delhi Police officer confirmed to CNN-IBN.

Three or four people are also caught in the crossfire. The area is similar to the busy, cramped market area of Ghaffar Market in Karol Bagh.

Sources claim the terrorists holed up in the house are those from the Indian Mujjahideen, who could been involved in the recent Delhi serial blasts in which at least 22 people were killed and over 130 injured.

Soon after the encounter started, the area was cordoned off and senior officials of the Delhi police are present in and around the area to ensure security.

The encounter is still on between the Special Cell of Delhi Police and suspected terrorists. A team of National Security Guard commandos is also reaching the spot.

Delhi Police was informed about suspected activity at about 1045 hrs IST on Friday.

Microsoft launches second phase of the campaign to mark the Windows … fully integrated into Apple’s “I’m a PC” label.

After providing a pair of advertisements for Bill Gates and star Jerry Seinfeld in a little and moved a bit poorly-received sketches, Microsoft launches the second phase of its $ 300 million attempt to talk about Windows brand. Ads and kissing by the “I’m a PC” label created by Apple in the long-running Mac vs. PC advertising campaign, which in the PC have been (good), portrayed by actor John Hodgman.

To build the theme “Windows of life without walls”, the campaign hopes the consumer to prove that the Windows ecosystem of software and services for desktop computers from mobile devices for the Internet allows users to communicate, work, play and together with friends, family and colleagues. Windows can enhance productivity, collaboration and communication, as the barriers.

“On our way to ensure that Windows provides a life without walls, we have taken a step back and listening to new and changed our approach,” the law Veghte, Senior Vice President, Online Services and Windows Business Group, in a statement. “Then you see that in advertising, products, in the experience in retailing and Windows.com.”

The idea to kiss, and the subversion, a competitor for the success of the campaign is not new. However, the strategy will not run some risks, especially if competitors are not just back, the tables back. Social networks fertile ground for fraud....

The success of social networks such as MySpace and Facebook has created a fertile ground for predators, scammers and identity thieves, warns an Australian information security expert.

CQR Consulting Information Security Consultant Jody Melbourne said the “explosive viral growth” of social networking and media sites had attracted the interest of many business-minded people.

“These new, unregulated platforms are attracting interest from people ranging from entrepreneurs to unscrupulous scammers, spammers and snake-oil salesmen,” he said. “As with any medium of electronic communication or data-sharing, these social networks are being regularly poked and prodded by hackers and identity thieves.”

Social networking sites allow people to build a personal profile, chat and send messages and share photos and videos with friends. Facebook and Myspace are the two largest, general purpose social networking sites while Bebo and Orkut were popular amongst teens and young adults around the world. LinkedIn is currently the most popular social site for business networking and recruitment.

Melbourne said the social features being added to major services like Google and Microsoft Live would soon bring social networking capabilities to millions of new users.

“The problem is this rapid, widespread adoption of social networking sites has a number of dangers.” Threats include predators seeking young people, identity thieves who can harvest personal information from sites to use for criminal gain, scammers and hackers stealing identities by using a virus or malicious link to “hijack” computers; inveigle passwords; trick users into providing credit card or bank account details; or use photos or personal information to impersonate users on the web.

Melbourne said people often failed to consider that many employers researched potential applicants online. “Job seekers are being turned down for employment because of inappropriate or incriminating information and pictures on their social network profiles,” he said.

Ru Ba Ru Review....

Movie: Ru Ba Ru; Star Cast: Randeep Hooda, Shahana Goswami, Rati Agnihotri and Jayant Kripalani; Director: Arjun Bali; Music Director: Satyadev Burman and Sameeruddin; Rating: * *

Ru-Ba-Ru is a Hindi version of Hollywood’s ‘If Only’ (2004; Jennifer Love Hewitt and Paul Nicholls).

Being made as a modern urban love story, Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami are the lead characters who are madly in love with each other yet find each other’s attitudes and ways of leading life clashing and creating a rift which they never expected.

Shahana, who is a professional theater actress, plays Tara and Randeep plays the character of Nikhil. The love birds get the feeling of being made for each other till the individual needs and priorities take over casting doubts and sadness between them. This happens as Nikhil is a workaholic and is always pre-occupied with his clients.

The sparks of trouble starts off when Nikhil starts to continuously forget small things that goes a long way in showing the affection towards his lady love and makes a relationship stronger.

Tara wants to get married and settle down as soon as possible but her lover is in no hurry and as the time passes by his tendency to take his girlfriend, her family and friends for granted, increase creating tension. Finally the day comes when Tara’s mind, inflated with the thoughts of being not cared for, burst out and she takes some decisions to put her love saga behind and move on.

Then a magically mystical force intervenes and a whole new drama unfolds.

As per the needs of the script, the lead couple had to share more than ten intimate kisses as their relationship is shown as a very passionate and deep-rooted one.

Shahana Goswami thinks that a kiss is an eternal sign of romance and love and to portray the intensity of the chemistry and intimacy on screen it was part of her job as an actress to do what the director says. Randeep Hooda, being the more experienced actor and true professional, made sure that Shahana gets very comfortable before each scene was shot.

On the flip side, RU-BA-RU unfolds in a slow pace. Also, the second hour of the movie could have been shorter. The song in the pre-climax should’ve been deleted. Even otherwise, music (Satyadev Burman, Sameeruddin) is somehow effective though proving visually better. Andre Menezes’ cinematography captures the beauty of Bangkok in a mesmerizing way.

Randeep Hooda is a fine actor is confirmed yet again as he plays his part without overdoing it one bit. It’s a complete departure from his violence-laden roles (D, RISK) and he must build his bridge in romantic roles as well. Shahana Goswami is decent enough. RU-BA-RU should only cement her status after giving a great performance in ‘Rock On’. Rati Agnihotri and Jayant Kripalani are perfect for their parts.

All in all, Ru-Ba-Ru is a decent film and a one time watch.

The Last Lear Review ...

The film, ‘The Last Lear’ has a good performance of Amitabh Bachchan who tries to play a man who worked long in Shakespearian Theater and he starts living in the Shakespearian stories only. His skills in theatre is exploited by a movie director as he is called to perform a role in modern cinema. The actor is left with fatal injuries after the shoot. The film tries to say that cinema as a medium is less powerful and unrealistic, when compared to stage.

The film script has been taken from a play by Bengali actor and playwright, Utpal Dutt and the realistic performance of Amitabh Bachchan makes the audience to stay glued to the screens from the very outset. Indian cinema generally has less of Shakespearian stuffs but in Hollywood you have many actors who did Shakespearian roles. Bachchan looks very powerful in the movie, as if everything has been made for him to perform that way; in a way establishing how he is also capable of surviving in Hollywood, too. It’s amazing to watch him perfect confident in the film.

The story of the film is about an actor, Harish, who is bedridden and Shabnam, his co-star comes to meet him. Movie director Siddarth refuses to give interviews and Vandana and a nurse named Ivy, is taking care of Harish. Vandana does not want anybody to meet Harish because she thinks that people are responsible for Harish’s troubles.

The story is about a theatre artist who dreams of performing the “King Lear” and he is made to meet a director by a journalist Gautam. The director convinces Harish to work in his film and Harish agrees to play a joker in his film.

Harish teaches his co-star Shabnam about acting and helps her improve her professional and personal life. In the last shoot of the film, Harish gets hurt. There are many ambiguities in the script because it’s unclear why Harish does the stunt himself and gets hurt, when it was not compulsory.

Amitabh Bachchan is the life of ‘The Last Lear’. It’s definitely his best performance so far. The actor has been delivering strong performances in the past also. Arjun Rampal is evolving into a fine actor; which is very clear in this film. This is another performance that would fetch Arjun great applause. Preity is ok enough. Shefali Shah is superb. Divya Dutta is wasted. Prosenjit is alright. Jishu is impressive.

The good part of the film is that the cinematography is beautifully done. The locations are superb. Most of the shooting has been done in Himalayan location of Uttaranchal.

The problem with ‘The Last Lear’ is that there’s too much of Shakespeare in the movie, which, to put it bluntly, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea for a simple reason that Indian audience are not much into Shakespeare. Besides, certain themes may hold some appeal for those into theatre, but don’t work on cinematic level.

Also, Rituparno Ghosh’s choice of the subject has its limitations. It’s good to think different, but only when you know you can appeal to the crowd.

On the whole, ‘The Last Lear’ has something for the Festival circuit, but nothing for the cinema-going general audience in India. At the box-office it can attract people mostly from the urban sectors of the society.

Film Director Vikram Bhatt is all set with his latest venture titled 1920, a period horror film, produced by Mr. Surendra Sharma, Mrs. Amita Bishnoi and Mrs. Bhagwati Gabrani of ASA Production and Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. of MUMBAI SALSA fame.

Vikram Bhatt’s horror movie ‘1920’ doesn’t leave you zombied. But it does scare you enough to have a few sweaty, sleepless hours when you hit the bed at night.
The movie derives its title from the year it’s set in, when huge mansions (in present-day Yorkshire) stood tall on the suburbs of Mumbai and horse-drawn carriages plied on dusty grounds carrying dandy men in suits and women in Victorian gowns and hats. Sadly, there aren’t any buxom ladies in tight corsets here.

Rajneesh Duggal plays Arjun, an architect, and Adah Sharma plays his catholic wife, Lisa. The couple, wedded despite parental disapproval, arrives at a haveli that the suave architect plans to convert into a hotel as his big project. The only trouble is – the haveli is haunted by a spirit that eventually possesses Lisa. Even as the girl transforms from a beautiful bride to a withered zombie that talks in multiple voices and levitates in bed, the guy doesn’t run away but stands beside her, his love unshaken, until he finds a way to exorcise her of the demonic spirit.

Plotwise, ‘1920’ doesn’t offer anything remarkably novel or nightmarish. It abounds with clichés that collage any typical horror film – a large, empty and dimly-lit mansion with huge portraits staring down ominously at its audience. Or its rich architecture that glistens through the shifting shadows. Or a lantern-carrying housekeeper with mysterious facial expressions.

Despite this, the film works to an extent because Vikram Bhatt holds it tight until the very climax. The director lays the ground in the first half and shoots up the scare-quotient in the second half considerably enough for you to feel a full bladder mid-way through your carbonated drink.
The film also works because its actors, Rajneesh Duggal and Adah Sharma, deliver credible performances in aptly-suited roles. Adah’s blanched complexion particularly makes her well-suited to play a possessed girl. Raj Zutsi as the scowling priest is too stilted.

The music is quite evocative except the Rakhi Sawant number which stands out like a sore thumb in this sufficiently spooky tale.

Just don’t go expecting too much and there are chances that you might get some paisa-vasool scares.
